In what could stand as one of the most consequential cloud infrastructure deals of 2026, Amazon.com Inc. is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart in a deal valued at approximately $7 billion.

Breaking the GPU Monoculture: Why Amazon Wants Decart

As enterprise cloud spending on generative AI infrastructure continues to balloon, hyperscalers face mounting pressure to reduce reliance on costly third-party accelerators. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has invested aggressively in its custom silicon portfolio—notably its Trainium and Inferentia families, including the newly introduced Trainium3 chips.

However, running proprietary chips at enterprise scale requires sophisticated compiler, optimization, and orchestration software to match the entrenched software ecosystem of Nvidia's CUDA. This is precisely where Decart fits into AWS's cloud roadmap:

Deal Context and Competitive Landscape

The reported negotiations mark a high-stakes turning point following months of acquisition talks surrounding Decart. Earlier in the year, leading AI lab Anthropic conducted extensive due diligence on Decart before walking away from a potential $6 billion deal in September. Amazon, which is already Anthropic's primary cloud and capital partner, appears prepared to step in at an elevated $7 billion valuation to safeguard the software stack for its own cloud business.

If completed, the acquisition will dramatically strengthen AWS's competitive positioning against Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in the race to offer the most cost-effective and flexible AI cloud compute environments.
