Google Strikes Landmark $4.3B Nuclear Deal with Constellation to Fuel AI Cloud Data Centers
The aggressive expansion of generative artificial intelligence and high-density hyperscale cloud infrastructure is confronting the limits of the electrical grid. In a transformative bid to secure round-the-clock baseload power without compromising decarbonization commitments, Google and Constellation Energy announced a sweeping 20-year strategic clean energy partnership.
Unlocking 890 Megawatts Through Nuclear Uprates
Under the landmark agreement, Google serves as the anchor commercial customer supporting more than $4.3 billion in capital investments to upgrade 11 existing nuclear reactors across six sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. These engineering overhauls—known technically as nuclear uprates—will modernize steam generators, turbine systems, and digital reactor instrumentation. The initiative unlocks 890 megawatts (MW) of brand-new, carbon-free baseload electricity onto the PJM Interconnection regional transmission organization, which coordinates electricity across 13 states.
Because these projects upgrade existing operational plants rather than building greenfield facilities from scratch, the new capacity can connect directly to existing transmission lines without years of interconnection queue bottlenecks. The uprated power is expected to begin flowing into the grid in 2028 and scale fully through 2032.
A Two-Way Strategic Nexus: Cloud Meets Clean Energy
The agreement extends far beyond standard power purchasing. In addition to the 890 MW uprate commitment, Google and Constellation executed a 15-year supply agreement covering 2,700 MW of power from Constellation's existing operating fleet. Concurrently, Constellation entered a multi-year technology agreement adopting Google Cloud and the Gemini Enterprise AI platform.
Constellation plans to deploy Google's frontier AI models to create an "AI for energy" operational framework. The software suite will assist engineers and operators with predictive outage maintenance, generation dispatch optimization, facility site selection, and critical grid infrastructure defense.
The Broader Impact on Enterprise AI & Hyperscalers
The deal reflects a fundamental shift across the cloud computing sector. With hyper-specialized AI training clusters demanding gigawatts of dependable, uninterrupted energy, major cloud providers are moving away from purely intermittent renewable credits toward firm, zero-carbon nuclear power. By underwriting existing reactor enhancements, Google bolsters grid stability, preserves an estimated 4,400 skilled energy jobs, and creates roughly 7,200 construction roles—all while sustaining the foundation for its next era of enterprise AI scale.
