The deal, confirmed by data center developer Crusoe on March 27, 2026, involves the construction of two new specialized buildings and a massive on-site power plant capable of generating 900 megawatts. This expansion is situated immediately adjacent to the existing Stargate campus, where OpenAI and Oracle currently operate a 1.2-gigawatt facility. With Microsoft’s entry, the total capacity of the Abilene site is projected to reach a staggering 2.1 gigawatts, making it one of the largest concentrated hubs for artificial intelligence compute in the world.

Strategic Realignment

While Microsoft and OpenAI remain deeply integrated, this development signals a push for infrastructure independence. OpenAI recently indicated it would focus its upcoming capacity expansions on other locations, including a new joint venture with Oracle in Wisconsin. Microsoft’s decision to step in ensures that the Abilene site—often referred to as the 'Silicon Prairie'—continues its rapid growth despite OpenAI’s pivot.

Energy and Infrastructure at Scale

To circumvent the constraints of the traditional power grid, the site features behind-the-meter natural gas generation and integrated battery storage.
